It’s that time of year again… you blinked and now summer is over. Yes, it really is September already. While the kids are back off to school, we’re getting prepared to pull our boots and jumpers out of hiding ready for the colder weather. But it’s not only our outfit choices that are affected by changing temperatures, our skin can go through changes too.

So, how much can a bit of cold weather change our skin? Well, alongside a lack of vitamin D, we need to consider all the (seemingly) little things that come with lower temperatures. When it’s cold and breezy outside, our lifestyle changes. We eat differently (goodbye salads, hello comfort food), we wrap up in thick layers, turn the heating on in the house and maybe cosy up by the fire every now and then. All of this plus, the added chill of cold winds and rain, puts our skin through a whirlwind of multiple temperatures mixed with heartier foods. Not to mention the common cold itself – who doesn’t know the pain of a dry nose and lips brought on by sniffles and tissues?

What does this do to our skin?
Many of us are already aware that our skin gets dryer when it gets colder, and this is mostly why. Our skin just doesn’t agree with being slapped in the face with a cold gust of wind. Existing skin conditions can worsen during colder months. If you’re acne-prone, watch out for that dry skin. When your skin dries out, it’s defence can be to produce more oil, which can lead to more clogged pores and acne breakouts.

And this may go without saying, but watch out for those skin conditions that are associated with dry skin. Eczema, rosacea, psoriasis… these are all conditions that can be triggered by the cold.
