Permanent Hair Removal Guide

By February 3, 2020 Seasonal Tips No Comments

Sick of shaving and tired of tweezing? Gone are the days that your hair removal options mean prickly regrowth, ineffective (smelly) creams or having to attack your hair every few days to remain completely hair-free. If you’re looking for a long term result, we offer some great permanent hair removal treatments from our Buckinghamshire Skin & Beauty salon that mean your days of shaving and waxing can be over.

IPL Hair Removal

IPL, which stands for intense pulsed light, can remove unwanted hair from large and small areas of the body in minutes, to achieve results that last for years

Ellipse (the IPL Hair Removal technology) uses short, safe bursts of intense pulsed light which is absorbed by a pigment in your hair, which converts into heat causing damage to the follicle, preventing future hair growth.

First things first, we’ll need to carry out a consultation to ensure IPL is the best treatment for you. The darker your hair, the more effective IPL will be so this will ensure the treatment will be suitable for your hair type.

What to expect?
If IPL is the treatment for you a thin layer of gel will be applied to your skin before treatment, to ensure the maximum amount of light enters the skin. The Ellipse applicator is pressed against the skin and a carefully controlled pulse of visible light is released. This can be as quick as ten minutes or as long as two hours – it all depends on where you’re having treated.

It’s worth noting that you may experience some mild discomfort and tingling during your treatment, but it’s nothing more than the pain of sunburn

Know before you go
✔ It is important to not remove any hair the 4 weeks before the treatment as this ensures that as many hair follicles as possible contain a hair which can be destroyed. This time of year is perfect for this as you can hide away in tights and cosy jumpers!

✔ For long-lasting results, it’s worth booking a few sessions as the first will only damage some of your hair follicles. We advise 6 sessions every 6-8 weeks.

✔ Both men and women can have IPL. However, IPL is unsuitable for anyone pregnant.

IPL Hair Removal, the closest in laser hair removal, isn’t the only permanent hair removal treatment. Electrolysis has been around since 1875 but is sometimes overshadowed by quicker laser treatments available on the market. However, it’s the only hair removal treatment certified as permanent so, if you want to put the razor down forever putting the time in now is well the investment into this permanent hair removal treatment.

How does Electrolysis work?
Electrolysis involves the insertion of a very fine, disposable, sterile probe into the hair follicle, which is a natural opening in the skin. A tiny amount of energy is then discharged into the hair follicle which is destroyed by heat (with thermolysis) or a chemical reaction (with galvanic) or both blended together.

What to expect?
The probe doesn’t pierce your skin and you won’t feel it enter your hair follicle at all. The only slight sting you may feel is when the small and entirely electrical current passes into the follicle. If you’ve ever experienced the pain of a wax, you’ll know this is nothing in comparison!

The first sign that the treatment is working is that the hair growth becomes softer, finer and lighter in colour. You will see and feel the difference throughout the course of treatment, so you do not have to wait until the end of your course to see a difference.

Know before you go
✔ Unlike IPL which is less effective on fair hair, electrolysis is suitable for all skin and hair types!

✔ It works on every part of the body, including smaller areas like eyebrows as each follicle is treated individually.

✔ Having sessions on a weekly or fortnightly basis is advised. Once you get in the swing of it, each electrolysis session will become quicker and less frequent.

✔ Appointment times can vary from as little as 10 minutes to several hours, depending on how large an area needs to be treated
